Usage & Maintenance
You should only clean the inside of the lamp, not the decorated surface.
Here’s what you need:
- Water sprayer filled with clean, lukewarm water
- Hairdryer
- Low-speed vacuum cleaner (ideally a small, handheld, cordless vacuum cleaner) or a soft brush
- Piece of silk (we will provide this upon request)
- Clean cloth
Remove the lamp from the ceiling or wall attachment and place it on a flat, clean surface. Begin by thoroughly removing dust from the lampshade using the vacuum cleaner or the soft brush.
Use the clean cloth to remove as much dust/dirt as possible from the silk and from the brass structure.
Using the sprayer, wet a small section of the lampshade and use the piece of silk to brush that section. Then use the hairdryer to dry the lamp as quickly as possible, holding the hair dryer 10-15 cm away from the fabric.
Once the silk is completely dry, wet the next section of the lamp, repeating until you’ve finished.
It is important that you:
- Don’t use too much water
- Work only on small areas at time
- Dry wet areas as soon as possible to avoid any water stains
- Only clean the inside of the lamp, not the decorated surface
As soon as you’ve finished, hang back the lamp on its attachment: you should immediately notice that your lamp looks as new and beautiful as when you first bought it.
We use light-resistant paint to decorate silk lamps so they retain their vibrancy for years to come. However, you should not put your lamp where it will be subjected to direct sunlight.
Clean your silk lamp a couple of times a year to keep it in prime condition (see cleaning instructions).
Silk lamps should not be used in damp areas. Instead, use Fortuny® glass lamps.
You can use either incandescent or energy saving light bulbs.
For suggested wattages, please refer to the product specification for your lamp, which you can find via the Collection section of the website.

Mariano Fortuny & Fortuny® Lamps
Mariano Fortuny was a world-renowned 20th century artist, photographer, inventor stage designer and fashion designer.
Born in Granada, Spain, he later moved to Venice, Italy. His work was based on an extraordinary synthesis of worlds, eras, styles and techniques that embody Venice, a melting pot of civilisations. Inspired by the noble roots of Western art and the magic of the Orient, Fortuny became one of the most original interpreters of Venice’s Silver Age.
Mariano Fortuny is most famous for his lighting and his fashions. He was a prolific inventor who filed numerous patents related to lighting; his set designs and innovations are still used in prestigious theatres.
His couture set a new standard for elegance, and is still inspiring fashion houses today. He was famous for his collection of pleated silk tunics, which included the famous Delphos gown, evoked by Marcel Proust in his Recherche.
Fortuny® lamps are produced exclusively by Fortuny Srl, the only company in the world entitled to use the trademark. Our production is based in Venice, Italy.
The Fortuny Museum is located in Venice at Campo San Beneto, San Marco 3958. Learn more by contacting the museum on +39 041 5200995 or visiting https://fortuny.visitmuve.it
